TMJ Treatment

TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint could be a result of several different problems. Bad bite is the most common, but an injury resulting from a blow to the meniscus cartilage is also a possibility. Initially, the dentist will thoroughly examine the jaw area, the patients bite, take x-rays, and review the patient’s history in order to make an accurate diagnosis and recommend necessary treatment.

Once a firm diagnosis is attained, there are several ways in which relief can be provided. A specially molded bite guard can be created to stop teeth grinding during the night. The dentist can also provide advice on relaxation techniques which will lessen the effects of stress. As a last alternative, the dentist is also able to prescribe muscle relaxants.

A better option is to change the shape of the teeth and get rid of the bad bite completely, often called “realignment.” This is especially useful because it alleviates TMJ symptoms and may improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth as well.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, retrieve it holding only the crown (not the root), rinse it gently without scrubbing, and if possible, place it back in the socket facing the correct way. If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation product. Then call us immediately—the best chance for saving the tooth occurs when treatment is received within 30-60 minutes. For primary (baby) teeth, don’t attempt to reinsert them, but do contact us for guidance.
If you experience a dental emergency outside our regular hours, call our main office number (305-451-8005). Our after-hours message will provide instructions for reaching our on-call service. For emergencies involving significant facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding, proceed to the nearest emergency room, then contact our office for follow-up dental care.
